Granted, the rare pop, or hiss would present itself in the audio, but this signal had something that had been missing from all of the Compact Discs and MP3s I had been listening to for the last twenty-odd years. When our system was finally set up and we queued up the stylus for our album purchases first respective spins, it was like I was literally hearing music by the artists for the first time. Especially now, with mention of the former Zeppelin reissue. We made this decision after encountering some newly-pressed vinyl from modern artists and classic rock reissues. My fiance and I recently decided to purchase a decent stereo and turntable setup to get into vinyl as a hobby. So these discs showed some minor signs of wear at times. The other recordings he picked up were essentially second or third-hand vintage at the time barely anyone then was pressing new vinyl, even less than today. I thought this was amazing, but my experiences with vinyl then were more nostalgic than anything else.

The LP itself was just as much art, visually, as the grooves carrying the music is art, with different images on each side of the disc. As a prime example of what records once were in the desert of the 1990’s, my brother bought White Zombie’s “Hellbilly Deluxe” limited edition vinyl picture disc. One thing that my brother mentioned, and I had no idea at the time, was the fact that some records could be cast in clear or even colored vinyl, not the boring black discs that I had known LPs as growing up. Somewhere in the recesses of his own mind, I think my brother was recalling memories about what music on vinyl sounded like from our even older brothers, who were young adults at the height of the vinyl stereo age. I remember going with him down to Short Vine in Cincinnati to Everybody’s Records store to buy what was then a recording medium on its last leg.

Shortly after this purchase, he acquired a turntable. I also remember the second time I encountered vinyl, I was a sophomore in high school and my older brother had just purchased a brand-new Sony Dolby 4.1 stereo receiver/dual tape deck, 5 disc CD changer. For a long time, this would be a comparison for music from the CD age. I remember it sounding very good crisp and clear. I remember when I heard my first all-digital recording, it was a Sony Music release of John Williams conducting selections from the original Star Wars trilogy. I had cassette tapes too, but tapes were as notorious as vinyl for “hiss” and probably had worse sound quality than vinyl in the long-run. Since I didn’t really have much exposure to good-quality stereo equipment, it was crap quality, but it was music.

I remember being a little kid and listening to records, mistreating an old Beach Boys record, just because I had no knowledge on how to properly handle vinyl discs. I remember growing up at the very tail-end of the age of vinyl. In many instances, this discovery has taught me much about how heavily economics influence modern cultural norms, specifically in music. I am thankful that I have recently been able to rediscover music via the 33 1/3 RPM LP vinyl record.

At the height of the reign of vinyl LP’s in the early to middle 1970’s, bands like Led Zeppelin, who’s newly reissued Led Zeppelin IV on vinyl proves, especially today, that a great band should be able to make a musical statement in no more than 10 tracks and that music consumers allowed the record industry to deliver them watered-down and sometimes, sub-standard product as a result of the digital music revolution (coup). Modern music and the industrialization there of is killing what we should appreciate about music.
